Air Marshal Sir Roger Austin is a retired Royal Air Force officer. He was born on March 9 1940, in the United Kingdom and rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Systems).

After graduating from King Alfred’s Grammar School, Roger enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1957 at the age of 17. In 1969, he was made the commanding officer of No. 54 Squadron. Five years later, Austin became the commanding officer of No. 233 Officer Conversion Unit and, in 1977, the Personal Staff Officer to the Air Officer Commanding RAF Strike Command.

Because of his dedication and commitment to the service, in 1980, he rose to become the Station Commander at RAF Chivenor. Other notable positions Roger Astin held before becoming the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Systems) include Commandant of the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, Director-General of Aircraft, Officer in charge of the Central Tactics and Trials Organisation, and Director of Operational Requirements at the Ministry of Defence.

He retired in 1997 as the Deputy Chief of Defence Procurement (Operations). Roger was the National President of the Royal British Legion. He has bestowed the honour of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.

His achievements made him an international figure, and he received the nation’s highest distinction, Hero of the Soviet Union, and many titles and medals. At age 21, Gagarin entered the First Chkalov Higher Air Force Pilots School in Orenburg in 1995. He enlisted as a lieutenant in the Soviet Air Forces in November 1957 and was posted at the Luostari Air Base, near the Norway–Soviet Union border, before being chosen alongside five other cosmonauts for the Soviet space programme.

After a successful spaceflight, he was appointed the Cosmonaut Training Centre deputy training director, named after him. In 1962, he was selected as deputy of the Soviet Union and later elevated to the Soviet of Nationalities, the lower and upper chambers of the Supreme Soviet, respectively.

His second space trip was unsuccessful as a backup crew member to Soyuz 1, which ended in a fatal crash, resulting in the death of fellow and friend cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov. The clash and death of Vladimir Komarov resulted in Yuri being banned from embarking on further spaceflights because of the fear that another high-level national hero might die.

Gagarin was permitted to fly regular aircraft again after completing training at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. He died five days later after clashes near the town of Kirzhach while piloting the MiG-15 with flight instructor Vladimir Seryogin.
