The exchange of soldiers’ remains was arranged by both governments with the help of the Red Cross.
Russia and Ukraine agreed on Friday to swap the remains of slain soldiers, allowing each country to reclaim the bodies for dignified burial.
Approximately 132 soldiers were returned to their home nations after being slain during Russia’s continuing invasion of Ukraine.
The mutual exchange was organized by government entities in both nations including the Red Cross.
Shamsayil Saraliyev, a member of the Russian parliament, informed official media that the country has received the bodies of 55 slain troops.
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported 77 remains recovered from Russian captivity.
“The preparations for the repatriation exchange had been underway for a long time,” the Ukrainian agency stated, according to the Moscow Times.
Ukraine’s military have achieved remarkable success against Russia’s fearsome Black Sea navy, resulting in greater grain shipments despite low expectations from allies.
Western attention has been mostly focused on the outcomes of Ukraine’s much-touted and debated counteroffensive, which failed to yield the victories that many expected. Instead, Ukraine has covertly sought to secure relatively safe exports across the Black Sea, ensuring that grain shipments continue amid the war.
In July 2022, the United Nations struck a compromise to assure that the “breadbasket of Europe,” which accounts for 30% of world grain production, could continue to ship crucial grains despite a Russian blockade.
One year later, the agreement fell apart, and Russia began attacking grain silos, raising concerns about a food shortage problem. However, as it had done during the conflict, Ukraine refused to succumb to Moscow’s coercion and worked relentlessly to develop alternate modes of transportation.
