Career
Petty’s first professional race of 1979 was the Daytona ARCA 200, which he won. He achieved a first in major league stock car racing as the youngest driver to win. He debuted in the Winston Cup Series later in the season. His finishing position at the 1979 Talladega 500 was tenth. He made fifteen starts in the Dodge Magnum number 42 in 1980, the same number his grandpa, Lee Petty, had driven. Although he eventually went back to racing in the number 42, he started the 1981 season in his father’s number 43 vehicle. However, in 1983, after receiving sponsorship from 7-Eleven, he changed to the number 7.
He moved his sponsorship to Wood Brothers Racing in 1985. He scored his first top-ten points and finished seven times in the top five. He took first place in the 1986 Miller High Life 400, the first race of his career. He kept getting sponsorships for the remainder of the 1980s, but in 1991, he was frightened when he injured his leg in a Winston 500 collision. After that, he rested for eleven more races.
In 1992, Petty bounced back to finish sixth in points, a career-best, and win two races: Watkins Glen and Rockingham. In 1992, he missed winning the title due to a flat tyre in the second-to-last race in Phoenix and an engine breakage during the season’s last race. In 1993, he repeated his high-points finish and won the Champion Spark Plug at Pocono. However, he placed only fourth in any event the following year, which cost him several sponsorships.
