Officials claim that in 2023, thousands of migrants died while attempting to travel by boat to Spain.

According to a Spanish non-profit organization on Tuesday, over 6,600 migrants lost their lives last year while attempting to enter Spain by boat.
The number is more than twice as high as what Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) reported to be 2,390 deaths the previous year.
The group claimed that 2023 was the deadliest year since it started recording deaths in 2007. On the so-called Atlantic route, which runs from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands, west of Morocco, most of the 6,618 recorded deaths occurred.

There were 384 children and 363 women in the population.
According to Caminando Fronteras, it aggregates its own data from rescue and immigrant families.
According to Spain’s interior ministry, a record 55,618 migrants entered the country by boat last year—nearly twice as many as the year before. Most of them arrived via the Atlantic route.
