The Gestapo kept tabs on Schwab’s family, summoning his mother (from Zürich) in the autumn of 1944 because he couldn’t speak “proper high German” at school. Despite his father’s Lutheran baptism, Schwab was reared Catholic. He is a German citizen despite having three Swiss grandparents and two Swiss brothers. Despite several offers of naturalization from both Kurt Furgler and Ueli Maurer, he remains without Swiss citizenship.
