She left rural Western Canada for the first time when she was twenty years old and chose to make folk music her career in Ontario. After moving to Ontario, she started taking employment playing folk music for bars, small parties, and other informal settings. She got pregnant in 1964, and her boyfriend broke up with her. In 1965, she placed the newborn girl for adoption since she lacked the financial means to raise a child.

After meeting Mitchell, folk musician Tom Rush was handed one of Joni Mitchell’s compositions, “Urge for Going,” which he recorded performing in the late 1960s. The song became popular in folk circles when other musicians heard him play it. She began working with the record company Reprise in the spring of 1968, releasing her debut album, “Song to a Seagull.” Critics appreciated it despite its lackluster ranking of 189 on the Billboard 200 album list. Her next album, “Clouds,” was released in 1969, and the following year she took home the Grammy for Best Folk Performance.

Her third album from 1970, “Ladies of the Canyon,” debuted at number 27 and was subsequently certified platinum. The album did better than her first, debuting at number 31 on the Billboard album list. “Blue,” her subsequent album, was a commercial hit and was regularly included in lists of the best albums ever made. After the album’s release, Mitchell went on tour and produced two more highly regarded albums, “Court and Spark” and “For the Roses.”

She was nominated for four Grammy Awards for her later work and won one in 1975. Her musical taste had changed from purely folk to more experimental, jazz-inspired sounds. With the albums “The Hissing of Summer Lawns,” “Hejira,” and “Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter,” she brought the 1970s to a close. She also worked with jazz musician Charles Mingus on their 1979 album “Mingus.” Although her albums from the 1970s were well received both critically and economically, her fans were bewildered by her musical move towards jazz, and the albums had a different level of popularity than her earlier releases.
