Attending school, he earned both his primary and high school education from a local school in his hometown.

Early Career

David Nicholls worked as an actor throughout his 20s, using the stage name David Holdaway. He played minor roles at the Royal National Theatre for three years and in various other theatres, including the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Working as an actor, David encountered several difficulties. His career direction changed after his friend gave him a copy of PJ Kavanagh’s memoir, The Perfect Stranger. Through this copy, his career switched from being an actor to a novelist, screenwriter, and playwright.

Screenwriting

As a screenwriter, David Nicholls contributed four scripts to the 3rd series of Cold Fet (both 2000) and co-wrote the adapted screenplay for Simpatico. David was nominated for a British Academy Television Craft Award for Best New Writer (Fiction) for the latter. David made the Granada Television pilot and miniseries I Saw You (2000, 2002) and the Tiger Aspect six-part series Rescue Me (2002). He later took a break from screenwriting after four of his scripts were canceled, concentrating on writing Starter for Ten. Returning to screenwriting, David adapted Much Ado About Nothing into a one-hour segment of the 2005 BBC ShakespeaRe-Told season.

David was nominated for his work for the British Academy Television Award for Best Single Drama.
